While there is obviously no substitute for a course of individually-tailored lessons with a full-qualified ADI driving instructor, we always recommend that pupils take advantage of the full range of learning resources available to help increase your confidence and make sure you pass first time.
A quick look on Amazon and you can see that there are hundreds of books and DVDs (and increasingly apps) on the market today, all claiming to give learner drivers a boost while preparing for the DVSA Theory Test and Practical Test. At Driving Lessons Edinburgh we regularly review these publications to identify the most useful learning resources, and so your instructor will be able to recommend the books and DVDs that are most appropriate for your particular circumstances.
Not only that, but as an added service your instructor will be able to sell you any of the official books and DVDs produced by DVSA, who develop and measure the national driving standards. These publications are created by the same people behind your Theory Test and Practical Test, and are usually updated to reflect recent changes in the course curriculum – so generally come highly recommended.
It is important that you only use up-to-date resources when learning to drive, because every year or two either the format of the test changes, or the information you are expected to learn changes, or the highway code changes, and so on. For example, in recent years there have been changes in the alcohol limit for drivers, changes to the rules on mobile phone usage, and changes to the independent driving section of the practical test. It is important that you only use the latest version of these books and DVDs – ask your instructor if you are in any doubt.
The names of these publications change from time to time (so please ask your instructor if unsure), but we frequently recommend the following popular resources:
- The Official DVSA Theory Test for Car Drivers
- The Official DVSA Guide to Hazard Perception
- The Official DVSA Guide to Driving – The Essential Skills
- Learning the Highway Code
- Know your Traffic Signs

Online Online Learning Resources
The DVSA now provides access to a number of official online learning resources – via the Official DVSA Learning Zone.
Examples include the Official DVSA Theory Test for Car Drivers, the Official Theory Test Kit for Car Drivers, and the Official DVSA Guide to Hazard Perception Online.
As always, please ask your instructor if you have any questions about choosing the right resource to support your learning to give you the best chance of success when it comes to your test.
